Slat wall behind a TV: how to plan it

A wood slat wall is one of the most popular ways to finish a TV wall. It adds warmth, hides cable clutter, and the felt backing on acoustic panels helps soften echo in living and media rooms. Here's how to plan one that looks right.

How wide should a slat TV wall be?

There are two common approaches:

  • Full wall: panels run from corner to corner. This works best when the TV wall is the room's main feature, or in a media room.
  • Feature panel: a section centered on the TV, usually about one and a half to two times the TV's width. A 65" TV is roughly 57" wide, so a 96"–120" (8–10 ft) section looks balanced.

Center the panel run on the TV, not the wall, if the TV is off-center.

How many panels?

Each Valora Decor panel is 24" wide and 9.5 ft tall. For a feature section, divide its width in inches by 24 and round up:

Feature widthPanelsAt $69 each
8 ft4$276
10 ft5$345
12 ft6$414

Mounting the TV on a slat wall

The TV mount should be fixed into the studs or wall structure behind the panels, not just into the panel. Two common ways:

  • Panels first, then the mount: find the studs before installing, mark them, and use lag bolts long enough to pass through the panel and into the studs. Screw through the felt gap between slats, so the bracket sits on the slats.
  • Mount backing first: fix a solid board or batten at the TV height, install the panels over it, then mount the bracket into the backing.

If you're unsure, ask your installer or the mount manufacturer. A TV's weight should never hang on panel adhesive alone.

Hiding the cables

Plan cables before the panels go up:

  • In-wall power and cable kits rated for TV installs can run behind the panels.
  • If you mount on battens, the gap behind the panels gives you room to route cables.
  • Mark outlet positions so you can cut openings in the right place.

Adding light

COB LED strip behind the panel edges, or recessed in a slat gap, gives a soft glow with no visible dots. It's a popular finish for media rooms. See slat walls with LED lighting.

Choosing a finish

  • Walnut: warm and dark. The most popular choice for TV walls.
  • Light Oak: bright and Scandinavian. Good for smaller rooms.
  • Grey Oak: a cool neutral that sits well with grey sofas and stone.

You can compare all of them in person at our Alpharetta showroom.

Slat wall with a fireplace

Slat panels can frame a wall-mounted electric fireplace below the TV. Follow the fireplace manufacturer's clearance requirements for any wall finish around it.

Questions

Can you mount a TV on acoustic slat panels?

Yes, as long as the mount is fixed through the panels into studs or solid backing.

Do slat panels help TV sound?

The felt backing absorbs some reflections, which can reduce echo in hard-surfaced rooms. It isn't soundproofing. See [do acoustic slat panels work](/guides/do-acoustic-slat-panels-work).

Horizontal or vertical slats behind a TV?

Vertical is most common and makes the ceiling feel higher. Our 9.5 ft panels are designed to run vertically, floor to ceiling.
